OOS Feed
There's a "feed" where information flows on a blog, forum or social networker, often relevant to a tag, category or individual. "Feed" can be used as a noun to define a food stuff or "feed" can be a verb indicating consumption.
This thread is OOS feed. The ultimate potluck with a twist from the conventional. For here, we consume not in order to live, but in order to die.
Behold...

Farmer makes pigs dive from platform to produce tastier pork as authorities "promote livestock rights" in China

"His handmade platform is also now a tourist attraction."
Whatever the motivation, for Min Chengjun, manager of fresh produce for Yurun Group, a pork company in Jiangsu province, quality is a driving force to changing attitudes.
"Take, for example, preventing disease," he said. "Improving animals' living conditions and putting them in a hygienic environment prevents diseases and therefore boosts profitability.
"Also, when animals are under great stress, it results in lower-quality meat," he said.

This recording seems to be attracting significant baboon hatred from many humans. Ironic considering the human species are ardent in the front lines when it comes to defending factory farms, military biological weaponry experiments and vivisection laboratories. So I say unto them, worship that primate, write him up in your histories and name an honorary ideology after him like you do all your other butchers who become famous icons of "human progress".

Costa Rica bans hunting as a sport
http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2012/dec/11/costa-rica-bans-hunting-sport
Under the new law, those caught hunting can face up to four months in prison or fines of up to $3,000.
"There is no data on how much money hunting generates in the country, but we do know there are currently clandestine hunting tours that go for about $5,000 per person
A country "banning" sports hunting. Sounds great doesn't it? A real victory? However, if my cynicism can be forgiven I invite you to take a look at the quotes and comprehend that the "fine" is little more than a tax and revenue source for the government upon "their" resources (aka, indigenous living beings upon which governments can apply a paltry price tag. As if those millions of years of evolved life and culture belonged to them). Pretty much any first world clown can magic up $3000 dollars when confronted with a stay in jail so it's fairly obvious that a "tough" sheep bully rancher, pissy little rich nancy boy and his inheritance-rich daddy or some soul-stealing CEO of a planet raping corporation is not going to flinch at a fine of "up to" 3K.

Cows infected with HIV produce antibody in their initial colostrum
http://www.sci-news.com/medicine/article00667.html
Potentially, a new industry whereby cows will be deliberately infected with an exclusively human disease, raped into pregnancy and the colostrum collected to...well...read the article. (The article does not mention that a newborn just might have required that colostrum far more than some ...human being)
It might also be worth mentioning that AIDS and HIV (http://www.virusmyth.com) could potentially turn out to be a red herring operation fabricated by Big-Pharma corporations in order to solicit an endless supply of funds for (a conveniently incurable disease) any number of illness's brought about by malnourishment and drug use but...that's for your research to decide.

Missouri Cattlemen’s Association chuckle with glee as measure to protect slaves from wilful torture is overturned

North Dakota voters stood behind traditional agricultural groups and voted down Measure 5 which would make it a class C felony for anyone who willfully and maliciously "burns, poisons, crushes, suffocates, impales, drowns, blinds, skins, beats to death, drags to death, exsanguinates, disembowels, or dismembers" a dog, cat or a horse.
The measure failed 67% no to 33% yes.

Wildlife trade 'threatening national security', says WWF
http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2012/dec/12/wildlife-trafficking-national-security-wwf
"It has been a failure. We are losing these populations in front of our eyes," Carter Roberts, the president of WWF, said in an interview. "It is being outgunned in terms of technology. It is being outgunned in terms of resources, and it is being outgunned, worst of all, in terms of organisation."
"It is one thing to be worried about the traditional poachers who come in and kill and take a few animals, a few tusks, a few horns, or other animal parts," Clinton told a meeting at the state department. "It's something else when you've got helicopters, night vision goggles, automatic weapons, which pose a threat to human life as well as wildlife."
"We need to work all across the enforcement chain: police, military, judges, customs," he went.
"We need to find out who is ordering the contraband, find them, prosecute, them, convict them, and incarcerate them."
What the governments and corporate shills (aka majority of wildlife conservation agencies - Check their CEO's) are really saying is that they're not getting a piece of the financial action in the form of ivory taxation (the ivory prices are rising vastly as it becomes scarce) and NOW...they're going to bring in the heavy guns.
Perhaps they might even start breeding rhino and elephant exclusively for their horns in order to stabilise the "market" based upon breeding projections vs. kilograms of ivory. What a wonderfully profitable solution that would be.

Obesity killing three times as many as malnutrition
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/9742960/Obesity-killing-three-times-as-many-as-malnutrition.html
"To bring down the burden of high blood pressure, we need to regulate the salt content of food, provide easier access to fresh fruits and vegetables, and strengthen primary healthcare services.”
Is this obesity factor and TV shows such as Man V. Food (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqIWPvCgi9g) nothing more than an utter insult to the millions upon billions of living beings who are starving to death on Earth? As for obesity...what a surprise that the diabolical quality of foods, environmental contaminants coupled with the thousands of hormone and chemically laden corpses that each and every individual meat eater is responsible for during their lifetimes might cause those human beings to get clogged arteries and fat guts. Notice how the article doesn't even challenge the concept of what "food" is, where it comes from, who it was, and what particular "foods" are causing the issues? That's because the media is part of the same corporation as the agricultural corporations and the pharmaceutical corporations and the medical corporations. It's like the human fucking centipede where everybody who is bottom feeding off the ass of the one in front can't even see themselves for what they are or the system for what it is...That's almost an entire species, all sucking ass while proclaiming its intellectual and spiritual superiority.

The hackathon about hacking meat
http://arstechnica.com/business/2012/12/the-hackathon-about-hacking-meat/
Developers and engineers who participate in hackathons are familiar with the rules. An organizer brings programmers together to work on either an existing or new problem for a mutually agreed upon amount of time, usually 48 to 72 hours. In that time, developers might break up into teams or work alone. But once they have understood the challenge presented to them, they sequester themselves to write code. After hours of sleeplessness and caffeine overdoses, the teams present a demo. These showcase working prototypes, rudimentary applications, or higher-fidelity interfaces on occasion. On the other side of this marathon of coding, developers walk out exhausted. But often, they leave with code that can solve a problem.
So what happens when this playbook is directed at something offbeat—like meat production and sustainability?
The challenges facing the meat industry and its consumers are vast: food safety, reducing methane emissions, improving meat quality, and helping both industrial and small local farmers among others. And all went according to plan: the hackathon model delivered unexpected results when applied to these problems.
The event brought six challenges from various figures in the industry. For fans of cutesy puns, these six organizations were labeled the “steakholders” and their roles resembled those of traditional clients (at least at first). The group included the Vermont Processing Group, Applegate Farms, Consumers Union, Food & Water Watch, Grace Communications, and the Environmental Working group. Representatives from each worked with three self-selected developer teams for 48 hours.
In the first phases of Hack//Meat, the participants shook hands, met representatives of the six organizations, snacked on foods that included—you guessed it—meat, and rolled up their sleeves to do the work.
“This was very different from hackathons I have seen before,” participant Will Turnage told Ars. Turnage is vice president of technology and invention for tech firm R/GA. He's also an organizing member of the Food+Tech meetup. “It threw me for a loop. I was expecting a traditional hackathon. In traditional hackathons, you get there, teams form and work fast. You demo, then you’re done. In this case, we were tackling other people's problems. We spent two days just learning what problems people had. No hacking, no coding. That couldn’t happen until we talked to the sponsor and learned about their issues.”
Turnage was the leader of the winning project team. His group worked with the Vermont Meat Processing Working Group (an organization bringing meat producers and processors together) to focus on challenges with the meat and food system at large.
Turnage's team won the top prize: $2,500 and marketing services to help continue their work with the Vermont Meat Processing.
Though this hackathon turned out to be less “hacky” than the traditional events, Turnage thinks the end result was better than simply pitting engineers and developers against each other like gladiators. They left with plenty of ideas, some common goals, and still a few unanswered questions.
Let me paint this scenario into a most simple picture. Several intelligent minds, computer programmers, engineers, etc, come together to brainstorm some issue at what is known as a hackathon. When they arrive, they discover that a representative of the multi-billion dollar meat industry has put together a list of efficiency problems that the meat industry is experiencing and has asked these "great" minds to put together some innovative and ingenious solutions. They do...and one team even wins $2,500 dollars for increasing the efficiency of a multi-billion dollar concentration camp.
So...Did nobody stand up and leave the room in disgust? These are supposed to be intelligent people...did not one of them baulk at the sheer audacity, the outrageous callousness behind what they were being asked to participate in?
"Hello, Mr. Intelligent Computer Programmer, we're just the kind of people who "shove the electric probe in the ass" of baby cows and don't know a for loop from our anus and never will...but can you please help us "shove" more "electric probes" up the asshole of millions more baby cows per day than we're doing right now. Thank you kindly Mr. Intelligent Computer Programmer."
"Oh yes, Mr. Probe That Baby's Asshole, we lurrrve that tasty meat, we'll work on improving the efficiency of your concentration camp for free...hell, just a couple of dollars and we'll all "shake hands" and "snack on" sodomised babies. It's human progress after all. Isn't it wonderful to be alive.

Enslaved population of Mauritania : 500,000 Give or take a few hundred thousand.
http://edition.cnn.com/interactive/2012/03/world/mauritania.slaverys.last.stronghold/index.html
Moulkheir Mint Yarba returned from a day of tending her master’s goats out on the Sahara Desert to find something unimaginable: Her baby girl, barely old enough to crawl, had been left outdoors to die.
The usually stoic mother — whose jet-black eyes and cardboard hands carry decades of sadness — wept when she saw her child’s lifeless face, eyes open and covered in ants, resting in the orange sands of the Mauritanian desert. The master who raped Moulkheir to produce the child wanted to punish his slave. He told her she would work faster without the child on her back.
Trying to pull herself together, Moulkheir asked if she could take a break to give her daughter a proper burial. Her master’s reply: Get back to work.
“Her soul is a dog’s soul,” she recalls him saying.
Later that day, at the cemetery, “We dug a shallow grave and buried her in her clothes, without washing her or giving her burial rites.”
All of Moulkheir’s children were born into slavery.
And all were the result of rape by her master.
The attacks began when she had barely begun to cover her head with a scarf, a Muslim tradition that begins at puberty. The master took Moulkheir out to the goat fields near his home and raped her in front of the animals. Moulkheir had no choice but to endure this torture. She’d convinced herself that her master knew what was best for her — that this was the way it had always been, would always be.
She couldn’t see beyond her small, enslaved world.
openly taunted the slaves who served them. When it rained on the Tagant plateau, slaves like Yebawa had to hold up the edges of the master-family’s tent to prevent water from leaking in, he told us. Abdel recalls hearing the slaves’ teeth chattering through the cold desert nights — and mocking this “teeth music” with his slave-owning friends.
“Here they were standing up, protecting us, and we were completely unconscious (and) ignorant,” Abdel said. “This was actually quite innocent because, for us, slavery was really a natural state. One must really have in mind that when one is born into a certain environment, it is considered the right one — just and fair.”
Soon, Moulkheir and her children were given to a former colonel in the Mauritanian army, SOS Slaves says. He was supposed to employ them. What he did, Moulkheir says, is re-enslave them.
“He turned out to be worse” than the original master, Moulkheir told us. “He beat me and slept with my daughters. He would fire above their heads with a gun” to scare them.
Soon, the abuse — directed not just at her, but at her young children — would be more than Moulkheir could stand.
“Many people in Mauritania see it as a natural and normal part of life, not as an aberration or even a real problem; instead, it is the right and ancient order of things.”
“On this land, everybody is exploited,”
Mohammed, an older man with a toothy smile and slightly lighter skin, told us in a nonchalant manner that he holds workers on the compound without compensation.
“We don’t pay them,” he said through a translator. “They are part of the land.”
Food shortages in Mahmoud’s village are so dire that children stave off hunger pangs by eating sand. We saw one barefoot boy scooping the gritty earth into his mouth with a bright green piece of plastic.
Such conditions are yet another reason some Mauritanian slaves actually prefer to stay in the homes of their masters: If they leave, it’s difficult to survive.
---
Throughout the article there is a forgotten slave. Not hundreds of thousands of them, but millions of them. These slaves are those referred to as "a piece of livestock", as if those millions of lives can be somehow confined to a solitary, insignificant entity. So, what about their lives? What about their suffering?

Two arms and a head
http://www.2arms1head.com/
An account written by a paraplegic.
Case in point: a high quadriplegic who cannot move anything below his neck, and needs a ventilator to breathe, says people like him are an “able group that can do as wide range of activities as most people without disabilities”. He’s a fucking head! A head! What the fuck can he “do”? Doesn’t this scare you? The idea of being a high quadriplegic is frightening enough, but imagine yourself also saying things like that! You might as well imagine yourself as a zombie. Is there no boundary on the extent to which a human being can be twisted and hideously misshapen, both inside and out? Even in a godless universe, one must marvel at the frightening extremes to which things can go horribly wrong for beings like us.
In a sense, the author's battle and the means by which he approaches it somewhat reflect certain issues that the OOS faces. The reactions he has received parallel some of those reactions that the OOS has received.
This document has the ability to curl toes...assuming you're lucky enough to have any. Perhaps "lucky" is the wrong word. Rather, it would be far more "lucky" to believe in a world where no living being had to bear the incredible indignity of such a thing as incapacitation and what that really means, because this is not happening to just one human being, or even a couple of hundred thousand human beings...it's happening to billions of living beings, right this instant and some human beings have deliberately and purposefully made this nightmare a reality via genetic mutilation, while the rest of the human world...doesn't even care - http://only-one-solution.net/slideshows/55%20Billion%20Cripples.wmv

Gangrape and Intentional Mutilations
www.hindustantimes.com/India-news/NewDelhi/Delhi-gang-rape-victim-writes-on-a-piece-of-paper-Mother-I-want-to-live/Article1-976798.aspx
http://news.sky.com/story/1029215/india-rape-protests-reporter-shot-dead
The 23-year-old girl gangraped on a bus in south Delhi was brutalised so badly that she had only 5% of her intestine left inside her when she was brought to hospital on Sunday night.
“It appears to be that a rod was inserted into her and it was pulled out with so much force that the act brought out her intestines along. That is probably the only thing that explains such severe damage to her intestines,” he said.
According to sources, one of the accused persons who were brought to the hospital for a medical examination on Tuesday confessed to having seen a rope-like object — likely her intestines — being pulled out of the girl by the other assailants on the bus. The sources said that the girl had bite marks on her body.
Government figures show a woman is now raped in the country every 20 minutes after a major rise in assaults. National crime records show that 228,650 of the total 256,329 violent crimes recorded last year were against women.

Torturehouse

“I seen them take those stunners – they’re about as long as a yard stick – and shove it up the hog’s ass… They do it with cows, too… And in their ears, their eyes, down their throat… They’ll be squealing and they’ll just shove it right down there.”
“Hogs get stressed out pretty easy. If you prod them too much they have heart attacks. If you get a hog in a chute that’s had the shit prodded out of him and has a heart attack or refuses to move, you take a meat hook and hook it into his bunghole. You’re dragging these hogs alive, and a lot of times the meat hook rips out of the bunghole. I’ve seen hams – thighs – completely ripped open. I’ve also seen intestines come out. If the hog collapses near the front of the chute, you shove the meat hook into his cheek and drag him forward.”
“Or in their mouth. The roof of their mouth. And they’re still alive.”
...“Sometimes I grab it by the ear and stick it right through the eye. I’m not just taking its eye out, I’ll go all the way to the hilt, right up through the brain, and wiggle the knife.”
“Only you don’t just kill it, you go in hard, push hard, blow the windpipe, make it drown in its own blood. Split its nose. A live hog would be running around the pit. It would just be looking up at me and I’d be sticking, and I would just take my knife and – cut its eye out while it was just standing there. And this hog would just scream.”

Horse-Ripping
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horse-ripping
http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2004/jul/04/animalwelfare.ukcrime
Horse-ripping, or horse slashing, is an animal cruelty phenomenon involving serious injuries in horses, often involving mutilation of their genitalia and slashing of the flank or neck.
Horse-ripping, which is regarded as pathological, is distinguished from castration of male animals, which is regarded as a normal pastoral practice.
====================================
====================================
The truth here is that it's a normal "human" practice to go around mutilating, raping, slashing, castrating, sodomising and torturing living beings, including their own species.

The Amphibian Pregnancy Test
http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/explainer/2006/01/the_amphibian_pregnancy_test.html
Wait a second—how do you use a frog to test for a baby?
You inject some urine into its dorsal lymph sac in the morning and check back at the end of the day. A dose of a pregnant woman's pee will cause a female South African clawed frog to lay eggs within eight to 12 hours.
But until the 1960s, the best way to detect the hormone was to inject urine into an animal and wait to see what happened.
In the late 1920s, a German chemist, Selmar Aschheim, teamed up with a gynecologist, Bernhard Zondek, to develop the first of these procedures, called the "A-Z test." The doctors would repeatedly inject five female mice with a woman's urine over several days. Then they'd kill the mice, dissect them, and examine their ovaries—enlarged or congested specimens would signal a pregnancy. Within a few years a slightly better test was developed; it used rabbits.
In 1930, a scientist based in Cape Town, South Africa, named Lancelot Hogben reported that he could use ox hormones to control ovulation in a local frog species—Xenopus laevis. His discovery was important for two reasons: First, it provided embryologists with a frog that could produce eggs year-round. Second, it provided doctors with a new animal for pregnancy testing. By 1933, doctors were using the "Hogben test" to detect hCG in urine.
The Hogben test was both rapid and reliable, and it spread quickly throughout Europe and the United States over the next two decades. Scientists were able to rear the clawed frogs in captivity, but it was easier to import them from Africa in large numbers. Either way, the reliance on live animals posed problems for the big testing centers. Even a facility with several thousand frogs could be shut down by a virulent disease outbreak. The development of new testing methods in the 1960s made the Hogben test obsolete.

When Pigs Start Exploding, It's Time to Rethink Our Food System
http://www.treehugger.com/sustainable-agriculture/when-pigs-start-exploding-its-time-rethink-our-food-system.html
From meat eating versus veganism, to high-tech megafarms versus lucrative backyard agriculture, there is much disagreement in the green movement over what our food system should look like.
But one thing is fairly certain. When pigs start exploding, it might be time for a rethink.
Yet that is exactly what Kali Dingman over at the Minnesota Daily reports is happening on hog farms in the Midwest, where farmers started noticing a mysterious foam build up on top of their manure pits which was trapping methane gases, and subsequently causing explosions that killed thousands of hogs.
Doubtless, exploding pigs makes for a sensationalist story. But its the matter-of-fact description of the sheer scale of these facilities that, to me at least, should be a warning bell that we might want to start looking for an alternative approach to agriculture:
The average pig production building holds 2,000 or more pigs and costs about $600,000 to build. A heavier pig weighs about 250 pounds, and, within a few weeks of market, a barn filled with heavy pigs would be worth about $300,000. The cost of cleanup after an explosion combined with disposing of the dead hogs could easily cost a farmer up to $1 million, Jacobson said. Not only will this research benefit the pork producers and their hogs but also the insurance companies of the facilities, Clanton said.
2,000 pigs in one building - is it any wonder that something was going to give?

Wisconsin Woman Allegedly Beat And Poisoned Dog For Months, Kept Torture Diary
http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2012/10/25/1080491/wisconsin-woman-allegedly-beat-and-poisoned-dog-for-months-kept-torture-diary/
I need to find a way to kill her without it looking like I killed her. I’ve done lots of things already. I’ve given her drano bleach & a lot of pain pills lol one night she got all tweaked out because of it, it was so funny. I beat the living shit out of her a few days ago & shes got a huge like sack on her head and she won’t stop puking on everything. So imma give her more pills & hopefully that dumb bitch dies. Because Steve thinks she ate something outside & that’s why shes sick. …
I just wanna beat her till she fucking dies. Which I mean I have beat her I mean. I tell you I don’t care how long it takes I’m just gonna keep feeding her pills & shit till she croaks because shes already sick & we don’t have any money to take her to the vet so hopefully she just dies so I don’t have to ever see her dumb ass again. I have never hated an animal so much in my life, much less hate one or beat one. But the pleasure I get from watching her whimper in pain & cry out for help as I shove drano & bleach down her throat is like no other.
Brutal abuse of dogs and other pets is sadly common around the United States, in part because several states have very weak legal mechanisms for prosecuting animal abuse. The abuse of animals is even more routine in factory farms.
"Brutal abuse...is sadly common" because of "weak legal mechanisms"? So human beings require laws to persuade them not to write torture diary's and inflict wanton suffering upon others because that's perfectly normal behaviour otherwise, right?
Disturbingly, the "diary" also reflects the mentality of a significant percentage of predatory internet trolls. It makes one wonder if trolls' "trying to get a reaction for the lulz" postings concerning torture and rape aren't infact founded in reality.

Political & Economic Tantrum Results in 700+ Murdered Dolphins
http://www.radioaustralia.net.au/international/radio/program/asia-pacific/international-outrage-over-solomon-islands-dolphin-kill/1077808
http://www.solomonstarnews.com/news/national/16985-villagers-slaughter-700-dolphins-in-retaliation
Earlier this week the village of Fanalei, on South Malaita, captured and killed over 700 dolphins, in protest they say at the non payment of funds promised by a conservation movement, to forego their traditional hunting practise.
But the conservation group, "The Earth Island Institute" is disputing that version of events, saying the money has been provided to village representatives, who have to explain where it went.
Correspondent: Campbell Cooney
Speakers: Lawrence Makili, The Director of the Earth Island Institute; Atkin Fakaia, Chairman of the Fanalei Honiara Association
COONEY: By any measure the number of dolphins caught and slaughtered by the members of Fanalei village in South Malaita is staggering.
FAKAIA: The number of dolphins that were caught was around 700 to 900.
“They go back to hunting dolphin in order to sell the dolphin teeth and meat to earn money,” he said.
Naive and anthropocentric environmentalists often claim that humanity has a place within the ecology of earth and yet this phenomenal death toll wrought upon the dolphin population was initiated due to (a tantrum) political corruption and economic concerns that are of no concern or fault of any other species on earth. Furthermore, no other species on earth would commit wholesale genocide in order to root out the former owners teeth that are thereafter used for superstitious cultural ceremony.

Goose Pulling
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goose_pulling | http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kP9CHUcwlLs
Goose pulling (also called gander pulling, goose riding or pulling the goose) was a blood sport practiced in parts of the Netherlands, Belgium, England and North America from the 17th to the 19th centuries. The sport involved fastening a live goose with a well-greased head to a rope or pole that was stretched across a road. A man riding on horseback at a full gallop would attempt to grab the bird by the neck in order to pull the head off.[1] Sometimes a live hare was substituted.
The sport was challenging, as the oiling of the goose's neck made it difficult to retain a grip on it, and the bird's flailing made it difficult to target in the first place. Sometimes the organisers would add an extra element of difficulty; one writer witnessed "a nigger, with a long whip in hand ... stationed on a stump, about two rods [10 m / 32 ft] from the gander, with orders to strike the horse of the puller as he passed by." The reaction of the startled horse would make it even more difficult for the puller to grab the goose as he went by. Many riders missed altogether; others broke the goose's neck without snapping off the head.[5] The American poet and novelist William Gilmore Simms wrote that
It is only the experienced horseman, and the experienced sportsman, who can possibly succeed in the endeavor. Young beginners, who look on the achievement as rather easy, are constantly baffled; many find it impossible to keep the track; many lose the saddle, and even where they succeed in passing beneath the saplings without disaster, they either fail altogether in grasping the goose, which keeps a constant fluttering and screaming; or, they find it impossible to retain their grasp, at full speed, upon the greasy and eel-like neck and head which they have seized.

Fox Tossing
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fox_tossing
Fox tossing would take place in an arena, usually either created by setting up a circle of canvas screens in the open or by using the courtyard of a castle or palace.[1] Two people would stand six to seven and a half metres (20 to 25 feet) apart, holding the ends of a webbed or cord sling which was laid flat on the ground. An animal such as a fox would then be released from a cage or trap and driven through the arena, across the sling. As it crossed the sling the tossers pulled hard on the ends, throwing the animal high into the air.[2] The highest throw would win the contest; expert tossers could achieve throws of as high as 7.5 m (24 ft). On occasion, several slings were laid in parallel, so that the animal would have to run the gauntlet of several teams of tossers.[1]
The result was often fatal for the tossed animal. Augustus the Strong, the Elector of Saxony, held a famous tossing contest in Dresden at which 647 foxes, 533 hares, 34 badgers and 21 wildcats were tossed and killed.[2] Augustus himself participated, reportedly demonstrating his strength by holding the end of his sling by just one finger, with two of the strongest men in his court on the other end. Other rulers also participated in the sport. The Swedish envoy Esaias Pufendorf, witnessing a fox-tossing contest held in Vienna in March 1672, noted in his diary his surprise at seeing the Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I enthusiastically joining the court dwarfs and boys in clubbing to death the injured animals; he commented that it was remarkable to see the emperor having "small boys and fools as comrades, [which] was to my eyes a little alien from the imperial gravity."[3][4]
The sport was especially popular as an activity for mixed couples, with the rivalry between the separate couples adding to the entertainment. At Augustus's 1648 contest, 34 boars were driven into the enclosure "to the great delectation of the cavaliers, but to the terror of the noble ladies, among whose hoop-skirts the wild boars committed great havoc, to the endless mirth of the assembled illustrious company." The same contest also saw the introduction of three wolves, but the reaction of the participants to this unusual departure is not recorded.
The tossing of foxes and other animals was not without risk to the participants, as it was not uncommon for the terrified animals to turn on the tossers. Wildcats were particularly troublesome; as one writer remarked, they “do not give a pleasing kind of sport, for if they cannot bury their claws and teeth in the faces or legs of the tossers, they cling to the tossing-slings for dear life, and it is next to impossible to give one of these animals a skilful toss”

California Biotech "Santa Cruz" Found Mistreating Goats for Antibody Extraction
http://www.topsecretwriters.com/2013/01/california-biotech-found-mistreating-goats-for-antibody-extraction/
"An environment where the animals are treated like factory machinery, used primarily for the extraction of blood so that antibodies could be produced for sale."
Even worse, a more recent 2012 report from October noted that SCBT “knowingly made false statements” to the USDA when staff there denied that there was even such an antibody production site in the facility, a site that USDA inspectors discovered housed 841 goats.
It appears to be the state of both food and medical production in the world today – where animals are treated as nothing more than tools to an end, only there for the benefit of humans.

Ladbrokes is gambling with fish extinction – and so is the government
http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/georgemonbiot/2013/feb/01/ladbrokes-gambling-fish-extinction
While all our commercial species teeter on the edge of collapse, the government will only heed to the fishing industry's interests
The gambling company Ladbrokes has been offering odds on the conservation status of various fish species. Earlier in the week it was taking bets on mackerel (http://sportsbeta.ladbrokes.com/Specials-Fish-Specials-MCS-fish-to-eat-list-2013-01-31-N-1z13z4lZ1z11psnZ1z11psgZ1z140ny) after it was taken off conservationists' "fish to eat" list last month (http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2013/jan/22/mackerel-off-conservationists-eat-list). Recently it has encouraged people to punt on the survival prospects of stocks of yellow fin tuna, swordfish and haddock. You can, if you wish, gamble on extinction.
Just before Christmas (which could explain the paucity of coverage the story received), the British government gleefully tore up the scientific advice, trampled the evidence, ignored the pleas of conservationists and gave two fingers to common sense by fighting to prevent the European Union from cutting the catch in the seas surrounding this country. (http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2012/dec/20/eu-fishing-quotas-conservationists)
Thanks to British lobbying, a proposed 55% cut in the tonnage of haddock caught in the Celtic Sea was reduced to 15%, while off other parts of the British coast, plaice, sole, scampi, whiting and herring quotas were increased, though the stocks are at a tiny fraction of their historic levels. All our main commercial species are constantly teetering on the edge of ecological collapse, as the industry fishes right up to and often beyond the point at which they can sustain even their desperately depleted numbers.
All this was accompanied by what the Department for Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs (Defra) called (http://www.defra.gov.uk/news/2012/12/20/fish-negotiations/) "another major success, achieved during the first day of negotiations, when the UK successfully stopped a cut in the number of days that fishermen are allowed to spend fishing at sea". The cut was to have been a central feature of the EU's cod recovery plan. Defra boasts that it "overturned this agreement". Another triumph for British diplomacy, seeing off the dark forces of science and reason.
The minister responsible, Richard Benyon, describes this idiocy as "the best possible deal for the UK fishing industry". For 2013 perhaps. And the worst possible deal for its future prospects, let alone for the health of our marine ecosystems.
Last month the UK topped this madness by successfully resisting the other means by which cod stocks were to have been allowed to recover: a 20% cut in the quota (http://www.worldfishing.net/news101/industry-news/sff-welcomes-results-of-eu-norway-negotiations). Thanks to the UK government, there is now no cut at all. The owners of the trawlers are delighted: once again they'll be allowed to destroy their own prosperity.
The chief executive of the Scottish Fishermen's Federation, Bertie Armstrong, who plainly has a lively sense of humour, called it "a good outcome based on the science". To show how badly this industry has been rolled up in its own nets, he added that (http://news.stv.tv/north/210313-agreement-on-no-cuts-to-cod-quota-a-good-deal-for-scottish-fishermen/) "the decision [by the EU] to set our overall share of the mackerel at the traditional level was also a sensible move."
What he is celebrating here is the EU's refusal to resolve the mackerel dispute with Norway, Iceland and the Faroes (http://www.monbiot.com/2011/08/08/mutually-assured-depletion/). All four players insist on awarding themselves a quota way in excess of what the stock can tolerate, with the result mackerel, until a year ago one of the few species not in serious trouble, is now being fished at a completely unsustainable rate (http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2013/jan/22/mackerel-off-conservationists-eat-list). That, dear reader, is a "sensible move".
Again and again over the past few decades, our fishing industry has clamoured noisily to cut its own throat, then responded with astonishment and fury when it collapses as a result. Is there a clearer example of being blinded to your long-term interests by short-term greed?
All this has been accompanied by the government's failure to establish the 127 marine conservation zones it promised, and even more astonishing refusal to exclude industrial activities (principally commercial fishing) from any of the 31 it deigns to designate (http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2012/dec/13/uk-marine-conservation-zones). (I'll write about this next week). The fishing industry - principally the owners of the biggest industrial trawlers - is the only interest this government will heed. It too is gambling with extinction.

Pigs of God
http://www.odditycentral.com/pics/size-does-matter-at-controversial-pigs-of-god-festival.html
Pigs of God is a controversial Taiwanese festival and contest where pigs that have been force-fed for years are publicly slaughtered, then put on floats and paraded through the city streets.
The origins of this gruesome event (http://www.odditycentral.com/pics/toro-jubilo-festival-makes-bullfighting-look-like-childs-play.html) aren’t very clear, but while some say it’s part of the religious beliefs of the Hakkas, an ethnic group with a population of over four million in Taiwan, animal rights activists claim that in the last few decades it has become a simple meaningless contest used by families to show off their wealth and power. They are currently fighting for the banning of a clear form of animal cruelty (http://www.odditycentral.com/pics/shearing-of-the-beasts.html), and the substitution of real pigs with ones made of dough, rice or flowers.
Getting a pig ready to enter the Pigs of God festival takes up to two years. During this period of time animals are constantly force-fed to a point where they are incapable of standing. This kind of procedure is both psychologically and physically damaging to the pigs, who often suffer from organ failure and pressure sores caused by lying down for long periods of time. Some owners castrate the pigs without anesthesia, in the belief this will help them get even fatter, and then pen them down so they cannot move.
Days before the Pigs of God contest, the animals are reportedly force-fed sand and heavy metals like led, to make them as heavy as possible. On the day of the festival, they are brutally dragged in front of a huge crowd, onto a scale, before having their throats slit. The animals are terrified, they scream loudly and some of them can’t even control their bowls, but this never seems to impress the public, who returns every year to Shanhsia, New Taipei City, to watch this twisted spectacle. After they’ve been killed, the fattest pigs are painted, put up on colorful floats and paraded around the city. The pigs often exceed 700 kilograms in weight, and there have been reports of some weighing around 900 kilos, which is just disturbing…
The funny thing is, force-feeding of animals and slaughtering them in public are illegal in Taiwan, but animal rights activists say the government is unwilling to do anything about what happens at the Pigs of God festival, for fear of backlash from numerous religious groups who claim it’s part of their cultural heritage.

For New Breed of Rustlers, Nothing Is Sacred (https://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/27/world/asia/cow-thefts-on-the-rise-in-india.html)
GARDINER HARRIS | NYTimes | May 26, 2013
NEW DELHI — When night falls in this gritty capital, gangs troll the darkened streets looking for easy prey among a portion of the city’s vast homeless population; thousands have been rounded up and carried off in trucks in recent years.
The police say they have increased patrols and set up roadblocks in an effort to stop the trafficking. In some cases, officers have infiltrated gangs in hopes of catching them in the act. But the brutal kidnappings continue, and the victims — scrawny cows, which are slowly losing their sacred status among some in India — are slaughtered and sold for meat and leather.
Cattle rustling, called “lifting” here, is a growing scourge in New Delhi, as increasingly affluent Indians develop a taste for meat, even the flesh of cows, which are considered sacred in Hinduism. Criminals round up some of the roughly 40,000 cattle that wander the streets of this megacity and sell them to illegal slaughterhouses located in villages not far away.
Many of the cattle in Delhi are part of dairy operations and their owners have neither the land nor the money to keep them penned. So the animals graze on grassy medians or ubiquitous piles of trash. Others too old to be milked are often abandoned and left to wander the streets until they die — or get picked up by the rustlers.
Posses of police officers give chase to the outlaws, but the desperados — driving souped-up dump trucks — think little of ramming police cars and breaking through barricades. They have even pushed cows into the pathways of their pursuers, forcing horrified officers to swerve out of the way to avoid what for many is still a grievous sin.
“These gangs mostly go after stray cattle, but they will also steal motorcycles and scooters,” one police officer, Bhisham Singh, said in an interview. “They kidnapped a woman recently and gang-raped her.”
Behind the cattle rustling is a profound shift in Indian society. Meat consumption — chicken, primarily — is becoming acceptable even among Hindus. India is now the world’s largest dairy producer (http://www.apeda.gov.in/apedawebsite/SubHead_Products/Dairy_Products.htm), its largest cattle producer and its largest beef exporter (http://usda.mannlib.cornell.edu/MannUsda/viewDocumentInfo.do?documentID=1488), having surpassed Brazil last year, according to the United States Department of Agriculture.
Much of that exported beef is from buffalo (India has half of the world’s buffalo population (http://planningcommission.nic.in/aboutus/committee/index.php?about=12strindx.htm#agri)), which are not considered holy. But officials in Andhra Pradesh recently estimated (http://www.thehindu.com/news/national/karnataka/adhere-to-rules-or-face-action-slaughterhouses-told/article4496678.ece) that there are 3,100 illegal slaughterhouses in the state compared with just six licensed ones, and a recent newspaper investigation found that tens of thousands (http://www.thehindu.com/news/national/andhra-pradesh/drought-forces-ryots-to-sell-cattle/article4642736.ece) of cattle are sold annually for slaughter from a market in just one of that state’s 64 districts. Killing cows is illegal in much of India, and some states outlaw the possession of cow meat.
Much of the illicit beef is probably sold as buffalo, an easy way to hide a sacrilegious act. But sometimes it makes its way to meat sellers in Delhi whose cellphone numbers are passed around in whispers. Steaks can be ordered from these illicit vendors in transactions that are carried out like drug deals.
Beef from cattle is also widely consumed by Muslims and Dalits, among India’s most marginalized citizens. Indeed, meat consumption is growing the most among the poor, government statistics show, with overall meat eating growing 14 percent (http://www.eaindustry.nic.in/indx_download_0405/month2.xls) from 2010 to 2012.
Anuj Agrawal, 28, said he grew up in a strictly vegetarian Hindu household but tried chicken for the first time in his teens when he was at a restaurant with friends. He now eats every kind of meat, including beef steaks and burgers. “Once you taste meat, you’re not going back to just fruits and vegetables,” Mr. Agrawal said.
He says many of his friends have made similar transitions. But he never eats meat with his grandparents: “I would be excommunicated if I did, so I go pure ‘veg’ when I’m with them. I want to inherit something.”
To some extent, the growing acceptance of beef is a result of the government’s intense focus on increasing milk production, which has led to a proliferation of foreign cattle breeds that do not elicit the same reverence as indigenous ones, said Clementien Pauws, president of Karuna Society for Animals and Nature (http://www.karunasociety.org/), an animal welfare agency in Andhra Pradesh.
“Cows are all about business and money now, not religion,” Ms. Pauws said. “They’re all taken to slaughterhouses. It’s terrible.”
This is not to say that eating beef from cattle is widely accepted. The vast majority of Hindus still revere cows, and the Bharatiya Janata Party, one of the country’s two major political parties, has demanded that laws against cow slaughter be strengthened.
Some landlords even refuse to rent to those who confess to a taste for meat.
But the demand for beef keeps rising, many here say, and with it the prevalence of cattle rustling. Last year, the police in Delhi arrested 150 rustlers, a record number. This year, arrests have continued to surge, Mr. Singh said.
Typically, the rustlers creep into the city at night. When the criminals spot stray cattle and few onlookers they stop the truck, push out a ramp and use a rope to lead the cow to its doom.
The thieves can usually fit about 10 cows on a truck, and each fetches 5,000 rupees — about $94. In a country where more than 800 million people live on less than $2 a day, a single night’s haul of more than $900 represents serious temptation.
One man who has helped the police in neighboring Uttar Pradesh said the rustlers were often able to bribe their way to freedom. “Even if they’re sent to jail, they come out in 10 to 15 days and commit the same crimes again,” said the man, who did not want his name used for fear of reprisals.
The unfortunate fate of some of Delhi’s cattle has led some Hindus to establish cattle shelters on the fringes of the metropolitan region. One of the largest is Shri Mataji Gaushala, where thousands of cattle live on about 42 acres.
Sometimes, the rescue comes too late. Brijinder Sharma, the shelter manager, whose office walls are decorated with drawings of Lord Krishna hugging a calf, showed a video of a truck packed with cattle that was seized on its way to an illegal slaughterhouse. Many of the cows had already died of heat exhaustion.
“The social and religious status of cows has been under attack in India,” Mr. Sharma said. He hopes that his shelter, which has an annual budget of $5.4 million, underwritten almost entirely by wealthy Indians who have emigrated to the United States, will help reverse that trend.
The afternoon feeding at the shelter attracted a crowd of happy onlookers. Abhishek, a one-named cowhand, called out among the lowing throng: “Sakhi! Sakhi!” A large cow with huge horns rushed to the front of the herd, and Mr. Abhishek kissed her on the nose. The cow responded by licking one entire side of his face, and Mr. Abhishek beamed.
